Sunday night at The Centre Ice Rink in Harrington offered several intense games that were decided in the final minutes. The first game of the night was evenly matched as Wilson Contracting’s “Stars” and the “Mad Dogs” fought until the final minutes for the win. Stars’ Dave Wilson (unassisted) scored the first goal; however, the Mad Dogs’ Chris Good (assist: Mark Sordi) scored the equalizer and Robert Genova (assists: Andrew Whitman, Sean King) would ensure the (2-1) lead for the Mad Dogs at the end of the first period. In the second period, Stars’ goalie, Joe Alvarado, held back all attempts as the team’s Fred Messa (assist: Robert Betts) struck the only goal for the period and tied the game (2-2). In the final, deciding period, the Stars’ Dave Wilson (assist: John Michalik) struck first to take the lead. However, the Mad Dogs’ Andrew Whitman (assist: Robert Genova) would score the equalizer, and it looked as if the game would end in a tie. However, with less than two minutes left in the game, the Stars’ captain, Dave Wilson, roofed an unassisted shot to the upper right corner for a hat trick and the (4-3) win.
In the second game, Stover Homes’ “Outlaws” took on the NAPA “Predators”. The two teams skated to two scoreless periods which were hard fought by both defenses and anchored by goalies Greg Gries (Predators) and Dave Freeman (Outlaws). At the start of the third period, however, the Outlaws unleashed their fury and scored four consecutive goals led by Joe Wobeter (unassisted) and followed by Tom Lathcart (unassisted), John Gregory (assist: Dan Matta) and Ray McCloskey (assist: Keith Younus) ensuring the (4-0) win for the Outlaws.
The third game of the night pitted “Finish Line” Collision against Jonathan Landing’s “JL Eagles”. Goalies Bryan Burns (Finish Line) and Joe Worts (JL Eagles) made outstanding saves throughout the game, and albeit each team seemed to own a period, it was the third period that decided the win. Finish Line opened the game scoring two goals from Jacob Lewis (unassisted) and Troy Palmer (assist: Chris Boyles). Bryan Burns held back all attempts from JL Eagles giving Finish Line the (2-0) lead after the first period. In the second period, however, JL Eagles answered back by a goal from Scott Brown (assist: Mike Laws) and Jamie Rau (assist: Mike Laws) tied the game on a breakaway. JL Eagles took the lead on another goal by Scott Brown (assist: Paul Kaercher). In the final five minutes of the third period, Finish Line’s Blaine Nashold (assist: Chris Mukoda) scored the equalizer; however, seconds later, JL Eagles took back the lead on a goal from Garth Baldridge (assist: David Schreffler) giving JL Eagles the one point advantage and the (4-3) win.
