BRONZE LEAGUE ACTION HOT ENOUGH TO MELT THE ICE

HARRINGTON, DE - October 3, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Sunday night, The Centre Ice Rink’s adult hockey bronze league games were action-packed and grew in intensity with each passing period. The first game matched Jonathan Landing’s “J.L. Eagles” against the “Outlaws”. The two teams played neck-and-neck throughout the first two periods, but a last minute fury from J.L. Eagles won them the game. J.L. Eagles’ Matthew Funston scored the first goal, unassisted, followed closely by Outlaws’ Daniel Matta, also unassisted. Near the end of the first period, J.L Eagles’ Michael Laws (assist: Funston, #19) ended the period with a power play giving the team a one-point lead. The Outlaws put on their game face in the second period taking control with three consecutive goals by #4 (assist: Matta), #17 (assist: Mark Hoffman, Randy Hultman), and Matta, unassisted. Funston, of the J.L. Eagles, was able to narrow the Outlaws’ lead by one-point when he put one in the net (assists: Laws, Paul Butler). At the top of the third, James Rau (assist: Jon Burgess), from J.L. Eagles, netted the equalizer to tie the game 4-4. The J.L. Eagles then set their sites on the win and grabbed two more goals: Christopher Good (assist: David Schreffler) and Laws (assists: Paul Kaercher, Funston) winning the game 6-4.

In game two, players from both NAPA’s “Predators” and “Finish Line” Collision were in high spirits as they took the ice. In a constant back-and-forth, only the Predators’ Matthew Warrington (assists: Brian Bassett, Robert Bassett) put one in the net during the first period. During an extremely energetic second period, both teams played in the defensive zone and the teams’ goalies—Gregory Gries (Predators) and Bryan Burns (Finish Line) were hard at work achieving several terrific saves and holding back all attempts. At the top of the third period, B. Bassett (assists: R. Bassett, Warrington) scored again for the Predators. Minutes later, team member Michael Grosso (assists: R. Bassett, Lee Emmons) grabbed another goal bringing the score to 3-0 in favor of the Predators. In the final minutes, however, Finish Line’s Cory Perdue (assists: Jacob Lewis, Ron Oronzio) put one in the net saving the team from total annihilation offering a final score of 3-1 in favor of the Predators.

By the third game of the evening, the atmosphere in the ice rink was electric as if an impending storm was brewing. As the “Mad Dogs” and Wilson Contracting’s “Stars” took the ice, no one knew the storm would gather enough strength to create a landslide, but that’s exactly what happened. During the first period, Stars’ goalie Joe Alvarado held back all attempts as teammate Richard Borrelli (assist: David Wilson) made the only goal for the period. During the second period, thunder erupted as sticks slapped and players for both teams fought to gain control, and each team gathered momentum with four goals achieved by the Stars: Wilson, unassisted; John McCartney (assist: Wilson), and two from Borrelli (assist: Wilson, Karpavage), and the MadDogs grabbed two: Mark Sordi (assist: Donald Kimball) and David Lonchar (assists: Sordi, Kenneth Lutz). Lightening struck in the third period as the Stars grabbed five straight goals: John McCartney (assist: Wilson), Wilson (assist: McCartney), McCartney (assist: Russ Moore), Fred Messa (assist: McCartney), and Wilson (assist: Messa). Despite a last ditch effort from the Mad Dogs as Lonchar scored in the final minutes (assists: Garrett Atz, Sordi), the Stars won by a 10-3 landslide.
