The Centre Ice Rink at Delaware State Fair is scheduled to open for its fourth season on September 6. "We've had an amazing first three years, and we're looking forward to seeing what the 2005-2006 season will hold," said The Centre's manager, James Breidenstine. Breidenstine's team added they couldn't wait to see "Icey" out on the ice. "Icey" is the penguin mascot of The Centre. According to Centre officials, Icey made a few debut appearances in the nightly parade at the Delaware State Fair, and he's ready for the opening of his home...The Centre Ice Rink.

"Icey was actually the brainchild of one of The Centre's guests," says the fairground's marketing and public relations director, Tricia Southard. "The staff wanted to come up with a mascot, so we ran a contest, and a penguin was chosen as the favorite. The team came up with the name 'Icey', and he's been such a hit, that we've learned other rinks have picked up the concept." According to Southard, Icey will be on-hand during The Centre's opening to demonstrate skating techniques and to mingle with the kids.

Prior to opening, The Centre will host open registration for all ice skating, figure skating, ice hockey and off ice training programs for the 2005-2006 ice skating season from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm on the following days:
Monday, August 29, 2005
Wednesday, August 31, 2005
Friday, September 02, 2005

In addition to the many popular figure skating and hockey programs offered, The Centre also offers a re-designed Nickel Adult Ice Hockey Program and an In-House Youth Hockey League. According to Breidenstine, "Both programs have updated ice times and content for the new season. Also, The Centre now offers a true recreational adult ice hockey league--the “30 and over Adult Ice Hockey Division.”

For those new or displaced adult players looking for a team in an appropriate division to play on, the annual Centre Adult Hockey League Draft night will be held Sunday, September 11; drafts begin at 6:00 pm. Players, 18 yrs and older interested in playing on one of the three adult hockey divisions, are invited to drop-in for a skate evaluation for placement on a team. Newcomers to the sport are invited; goalies are needed!
